North Brooklyn Mutual Aid (NBKMA),an entirely volunteer-run organization, arose in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 to address health issues facing the community, including food insecurity.
The goal is not to solve the larger problem of food insecurity, but to provide a local node for the community to meet, talk and offer a helping hand in a neighborhood that has been heavily gentrified.
To embody the mantra “give what you can, take what you need.”
The shelter design protects the fridge from year-round weather conditions, prevents vermin infestations, as well as cover neighbors while they use the fridge.
